Okay. Let's assume your Grand Lodge is having a benevolent fundraising drive to meet some community need.
If you give to this, is it tax deductible ?

Re: A Masonic Question..
Wed, February 18, 2009 - 7:31 PMThe reason for my question is that donations make to our GL are not tax deductible..
So I am doing a little survey on this..
Other responses would be appreciated
And thanks for yours Ethan .. .. -

Re: A Masonic Question..
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 4:12 AMI'm NO tax expert but I'm fairly certain it varies from state to state on what organizations can take in tax deductable doantions and what ones cannot. As it stands I believe we are not able to amke donations to any fund sponsored by Grand Ldoge in NY and consider them tax deducable regardless of a reciept or not. I do not know for sure though? -

That seems a little unclear.. but it sounds like you cant claim a deduction in New York.. -

Re: A Masonic Question..
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 10:12 AMIt depends on what forms the organizations files. I there are different types of non profit organizations and some are tax deductable and some not. Giving money to your lodge or grand lodge may not be but giving it to the charity fund of that organzation may be. It is best to have a reciept but you can claim a ceratin amount of cash givings every year also.
I only know this because I have a guy who does my taxes and I went to a Masonic Law seminar that coverd some of it. I am not an expert I just pretend to be one online. -

Re: A Masonic Question..
Wed, February 25, 2009 - 2:53 PMA public tribe for the discussion of freemasonry. No secrets, just philosophy and other fun things to talk about.
Please let's stay away from religion and politics, except as these subjects impact Freemasonry as a fraternity, or impact the philosophy and basis of Freemasonry. There are quite enough groups which discuss these topics, so we don't need to cover them.

Wed, February 25, 2009 - 9:29 PMJust commenting on how the "Socialist" comment may prove to be somewhat political in nature, that's ;-)

Re: A Masonic Question..
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 5:47 AMI think that he sees the topic as going into a political arena and is trying to keep us on course - in a good way.
On the same note, the description also includes the statement "except as these subjects impact Freemasonry". I would think that trying to find out if donations to Grand Lodge are tax deductible are appropriate so long as we keep it in that direction. :) -

Right ! I get it now..
I feel quite comfortable with Jim calling me a Socialist. There is no shame in that. We do, after all, tolerate difference. Like how Jim is a fascist LOL
Above all, having spoken to Jim on the phone from Australia on the odd occasion, I feel happy for him to take digs at me as I know it is done in the context of Brotherly Love and Respect.. but that does not mean he cant have a joke on me :) I am sure we wont take it too far.. we want to keep the mutual gifts flowing.. I still owe him a packet of tim tams I once had to give to a nice Irish Lass..
Thanks for explaining it and I get your point. I am sure both of us do :)
