Well, things are interesting at the lodge.
I was approached last night at the regularly stated meeting to inquire if I would be interested in taking the Junior Steward's office for the coming year. I have been studying hard and like the lodge a lot. And I've considered where I wanted to go with it. So I suppose this is cool. Just need to bone up on some of the work involved.
I'll also be in that position during the next degree ceremony on Tuesday. We'll see how things go.

Good luck. I was pretty reluctant to take office, but felt the Lodge needed my support so agreed to become Inner Guard (Inner Sentinel to many of you Yanks :) . Four years latter I have just been installed as JW and have loved every minute while in office. It can be a bit of a challenge at times but I have found it very rewarding! I am sure you will find it the same !!!
Let us know how you go ! -

Re: Masonic future
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 4:18 AMHm....that Inner Guard sounds like what we call the Junior Deacon.

Nope JD = JD.
IG is the first officer inside the door of the lodge. He stands beside the Tyler - just with a door separating them :) -
-
Re: Masonic future
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 2:52 PMOur JD performs that duty here.
Tyler outside and the JD is the only one to communicate with them.

Re: Masonic future

Oh ! That’s different.
Our JD is under the control and serves SW, SD under control and serves WM, IG is under control and communicates with JW.
Here it is Tyler and IG that communicate.
You learn something everyday :)
I love it when you try to use details like this to try and prove yourself (or others) a mason online..... often it is chalk and cheese... and yet not ::) -
-
Re: Masonic future
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 7:43 AMOur JD is at the RH of the SW and is under his control as well. We just ascribe the duties of your Inner Guard to him as well.
Yes....I am always suspect of meeting others that say they are a mason but are not members of my lodge. I am not quite sure how I would go about "verifying" them if they are not vouched for by another brother whom I already know to be a mason.

Re: Masonic future
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 12:43 PMi've recently been installed as the JD & am enjoying the role. there's a lot to say during opening & closing though. i believe that the JS works with incoming candidates primarily...<checks the ritual>... also, i am a PHA mason, so i'm not sure how the JS functions in four letter lodges...
besides that, be willing to ask questions when necessary. we're all brothers & there's no need to feel clumsy or awkward in lodge read through the ceremony before tuesday & ask questions about what you may or may not need to do/say...

Re: Masonic future
Sat, September 29, 2007 - 2:53 PMThanks.
The JS is not so difficult. No real speaking roles except when preparing candidates. Just floor-work mostly.
But it will give me a good way to study the next positions and try to set a good example. -

Re: Masonic future
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 9:51 AMI say it is evey Masons duty to his lodge and brothers to take a chair and advance if he can. Few men can't be Master due to work or time but they can learn other parts and take a role in meetings or degrees. Some other brother did the same for you so you could join you are obligated to do the same for someone else. You get out of lodge what you put in and if you do nothing but sit there and listen to the minutes and old men argue then you are getting very little. -
-
Re: Masonic future
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 10:00 AMI really enjoy the ritual and the traditions. The way I see it is that it is up to me to help keep that alive in our lodge. A good half, at least, of our brethren are on the high side of old and most have served their time in the chairs to some extent. It is up to the newer brothers to take up the flag and carry it so they can continue to be proud of our lodge. I've had nothing but kindness and frienship so far and I shall repay that with hard work and dedication in addition to my frienship.

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 1, 2007 - 7:43 AMI'll agree with everything that Jimmy said and add to it. Travel if and when you can. I've been to every lodge in our district (County) and a few out of our district in neighboring counties. I've been to our Grand Lodge's annual communication a few times now and that is also fun too! Since I live very close to the border between NY and PA, I've been to PA lodges often to witness degree work there and recently travelled to Philadelphia to see a good frined be raised. Some of my lodge brothers have also travelled to Ontario Cananda to witness degree work up there too.
This past Pennsic I with the help of one of my lodge brothers and Jimmy we held a Masonic gathering that was deemed a success. I still look forward to someday meeting with Jimmy on the level in lodge but I have no doubt he is a true Mason.
I'll repeat once again what jimmy said, you get out of Freemasonry what you put into it. This starts in your heart and your home lodge. Your best work will be done there. -

Re: Masonic future
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 3:27 PMVal maybe we should do the next one at the castle??? -
-
Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:00 AMI agree Jimmy best spot of course would be the Archery range up on the hill though! I just do not want to walk up that far!
Really you are right in that the Castle would be the best. Now to figure out the logistics of it. -

Re: Masonic future
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 4:56 PMI would LOVE to attend that one! My wife would love the Pennsic with My son and I and then I could get an extra bonus!!! -

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 4:50 AMPennsic is the toughest Medieval camping venue you will ever love! Defeintely do your research first before committing! My biggest recomendation is simply to go and be preppared for everything, including snow in August as well as searing, scorching heat and monsoons and other wet possibilities.
The Masonic "thing" is simply a short distraction in a 2 week long event.

Thu, October 18, 2007 - 8:48 AMNo kidding. I wouldn't want to shlepp all the way up the hill. LOL
I thought we did ok. The meeting was private enough to have general discussions. We "tiled the door" as best as we could. Who knows...since we had a Cooper there maybe he could offer a suggestion or two. ;-)

Mon, October 1, 2007 - 7:34 AMI'll answer several posts here in succesion so bear with me! LOL
In Ny the J&S stewards have lots of floor work in teh degrees and gernerally I've never seen them used since we generally cannot get enough folsk to fill all the positions. Kudos to you if yo & your lodge can do that! it does add to teh degreework. The other traditional part is since the stewards sit in fornt of the JW they help him with the meals or are supposed to anyway.

Re: Masonic future
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 7:58 PMWell.....so much for JS. Lately I've been tasked with performing as Senior Steward, not only in stated meetings (like tonite) but also for the next upcoming degree work for three 3rd degrees over the next two weeks and maybe two 2nd the following week. I did a stint as Junior Deacon for a stated meeting as well.
I think our SW (who will be taking the big chair in December) is conspiring with our WM just trying to see how far they can "push" me. It's all good fun, though. I am enjoying the challenge.
We'll see where this leads soon, I hope. -

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 6:55 AMI'm the type that needs to do it to know it. I need to see it and do it MANY times to learn it. So at times I enjoy going elsewhere to visit and being asked to sit in an office is an honor and others just being able to watch is very cool. -

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 7:28 AMAfter you've been in it awhile, sitting on the sideline can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand it is nice to just sit and enjoy a degree or meeting. On the other, it feels weird not having anything to do....

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 7:45 AMYeah.. that’s one of the reasons I like visiting – it is like a “revision session” with no pressure.. .having said that – visit a smaller lodge here and you often get a job :) -

Re: Masonic future
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 8:25 AMAre you saying some day there will come a time I could go to a masonic function and not have to be and officer or sit in as an officer? I think the York Rite College is the only thing I belong to I have not sat in, been apointed to or filled in as an officer for a meeting. I did participate in degree work. I can't wait to just sit down and chill. Since I have joined Royal Arch Chapter I have been an officer and the same went for the other york rite bodies. I was listed at chaplin on the back of the notice for council before I even had my degrees for council!!!
Can you say sucker? -

no I cannot. My obligation prohibits it.
I CAN however tell you that someday when you are the crusty old PM that you espouse to dislike that you will sit on the sidelines hard of hearing and whine like the rest of us! LOL! -

Nah –I plan to follow the example of our old tyler who, in his 80’s, runs around in the South helping to serve dinner, has the rare “quite chat”, smiles at everyone and is the most encouraging dude you can hope for.. He has a special radar for nervousness and knows jus the right moment to come out with ‘you’re alright mate/brother/lad/cobber ”. he is one of the few men who can call me “lad” (at 35) without sounding patronizing..

Fun time in the old lodge tonite
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 8:49 PMWell.....I took my first turn as the SS during the entire 3rd degree tonite. I can't say I did everything perfect.....there is room for improvement. It didn't help that the DDGM and a Past GM of Kansas were visiting the lodge tonite. But, they're gonna let me do it again next Tuesday. So....I'll try to be better then.
It was fun, though. And now I'm no longer the rookie MM in our lodge. WOO HOO!!! -

Transition Time....
Fri, November 16, 2007 - 9:14 AMOur annual communication is coming up in December and our WM will be stepping down. The SW will be taking his place in the East, and I have a good idea who will be filling the other big chairs. What our SW won't tell me though is where exactly he will be assigning me.
We had discussed starting me in the JS position, but then he worked me as the SS for quite a few work nights. Then I filled in as JD for stated meetings and work. And last night (after telling me we were opening on 3rd and I'd be JD) he informs me that he meant to tell me that he would like me to do SD spot and we're opening on the 1st. This I find out 18 minutes before we begin.
Now I'd sat JS, SS, and JD....and these I had time to study the ritual and the floorwork for the ceremonies and work - at least a few days notice. The SD chair is one I'd always looked at and thought I would have plenty of time to learn it and was secure in that fact.....until last night. I looked over the cipher, but there was no floorwork manual available, so I was relying on my own memory and advice from the current SD (who was sitting in for the JW).
Fortunately, there was no work, but there were visitors and a ballot.
I was told afterwards that I did very well and folks wondered how long I'd studied for last night. When I told them 18 minutes, they said I'd make a fine SD.
I don't mind filling in, and it's actually kinda flattering that they feel they can depend on me for such a thing. But, it does have me wondering what is going on in the mind of our SW....and just what he has in store for me for the next year. I'd like a little notice....so I can work on things and set an example my brothers can be proud of. -
-
Re: Transition Time....
Fri, November 16, 2007 - 10:12 AMMartinus,
For starters, you DID set an example your brothers could be proud of. You stepped up to the challenge. You did the best work you could do in such a short time and apparently did it as well as could be expected on what seems to have been an unplanned "move up" night? Exceptions can be made for brethren that are studying the parts or are asked to fill in when they have never done the job before. Now next time you'll be expected to be completely proficient! Start studying the JW & SW parts too! LOL! You'll be filling in for WM in less than a year at this rate! -
-
Re: Transition Time....
Fri, November 16, 2007 - 10:47 AMI am lucky as I have never been asked to do something like that in open lodge. A critic might say is presents poor planing. Mind you - it was probably a good night to give it a go and build confidence..
I like to do things well - and unless I feel I have a good chance of doing a good job - I am more than willing to say "NO". But on a meeting night in a crisis - I would help - even if it meant making an arse of myself... Because we only meet once a month - we normally have a lot of time to prepare properly. It is also custom that you can act in a position below what you have been installed in - but not above. This means you should keep your work nice and fresh in your mind (if you are smart and ready to be spontaneously slipped into a job). I could step into any office I have held with a moments notice and perform a degree - same with all charges I have delivered. They are still there fresh because I revise them.
I would be asking what work you need to prepare so you do a good job of it. However, quite frankly, you sound really good at learning ritual Martinus !
Valentin - "unplanned "move up" night" - we will only do those in a LOI or Rehearsal. Indeed if you have not been installed as a Warden or held the office previously - you cannot sit in that chair (same goes for Master obviously) in an open Craft Lodge in our jurisdiction.... -
-
Re: Transition Time....
Fri, November 16, 2007 - 11:44 AMAs I understand what happened, much of this happened due to our JW being transferred from here in KS to Alabama this week, the SS and JD having to work late and the idea that the SD would be moving up to JW in two weeks anyway. And the miscommunication to me was just that.
I suppose it's my own fault for volunteering to our SW and working with our current WM on doing proper work and ceremony floorwork and ritual. I find it very fun, which is probably why it comes easily to me. That and as a past Army Intel Analyst and current teacher, I've become quite skilled at deciphering things and the floorwork is just like precision marching, which I did in band all those years ago. And having done lots of theatre and teaching, speaking in public is super easy and learning lines quickly is super easy.
In any case, I still think our focus is on learning and quality ritual as soon as the gavel strikes no matter whetehr it is stated meetings or work. Is a lot of fun. -
-
Re: Transition Time....
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 11:44 AMI keep trying to tell the guys in my commandery that the marching and floor work is just like band too....they just don't get it. -

Coming year
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 8:40 PMI don't know whether to sigh or cheer.
I just found out tonite that I will be installed as an officer in our lodge this Saturday. My dilemma is that it will not be as the SS as I expected. I have been appointed to Senior Deacon instead.
While I know this shows great confidence in me by my brethren, I am not sure I am ready for such an active role. I suppose I'll take it and run with it, but I'm out of my comfort zone with it.
We'll see how it goes, eh? -

Re: Coming year
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 8:46 AMCongrats on your appointment. Feel good - it does show some confidence by the Master in you.
Enjoy it - as far as I am concerned, it is THE best job in the Lodge.
Good luck!
