"Sadly Grand lodges don't care about quality they want quanitity. They want GL dues rolling in. So they love one day classes and put the work back on the lodges to somehow keep the members. But that would be a different thread.... "

Here is Victoria, EA's and FC's must now complete walk throughs as an educaiton module of the Degree through which they have just passed.

They are issued a "Masonic Passport" which details their education and they cannot be advanced until they have completed their modules.

What is your GLs process for "formation", do they care or are they as Jimmy suggests ?

For the record I was expressing an opinion I have formed having seen one day classes and the attempts to keep the money flowing in afterward. Each jurisdicition will be different. We have a well defined mentor program, sadly lodges (that I know of) just ignor it for the most part. Just my observations and I am cynical and prone to strong opinioins. I am sure there are others who are happy with these situations.

The GL of NY does pretty well on Masonic education. There is the Masonic Development Course which teaches about the history and explains some of the degree work. We have reading courses which are free to Brothers from our jurisdiction through our library in NYC. (You can check out the offerings here: www.nymasoniclibrary.org/libra....htm). There is also "The Road to the East" for current and aspiring officers. There are many others as well.

But, there is a difference between education and formation. You need education as a part of formation. I am not sure that formation occurs strictly through education - perhaps with proper mentoring, maybe. I am still testing that theory. :)

The link above is malformed. Corrected it is www.nymasoniclibrary.org/libra...es.htm

We have something like that too Finn.

But it is not compulsory.. the big difference in the Masonic Passport idea which is about completing education modules is that is MUST be done.. or you dont move to the next Degree...

While I have been "lead mentor" in Finn's & My lodge I cannot say for certain that I've been the best mentor. I saw a need when I was Master that I could fill. I've done teh best I could and we've had a good "crop" of recent new brothers that have been receptive to it. It will be intresting to see where this theory goes as it is not a short term test and I'm looking forward to more brothers to work with.

Our educational opportunities are not mandatory either. I've muddled thru most of them but not being committed to it I've gone thru the motions without retaining as much as some or as I'd hoped. I will get on the reading program at some point. After next May likely?
