As of tonight I received my 1st degree as a Mason of the Overland Park, KS Lodge 436.
Although I had been informed that had been elected to receive it and told to show up at the lodge tonight, I had not expected to receive the degree tonight. It was....surprising and enlightening. And it was supremely interesting.

There were two of us receiving the degree - one after the other. I was fascinated by the ritual and stunned by the immediate acceptance as a brother. There were even those that asked about my wife by name to inquire if she was doing alright since they had met her.

I must say that I look forward to further learning and fellowship. Should be fun.

    Hearty Congratulations!

I was skeptical of the << immediate acceptance as a brother.>> probably for the first 12 months – I now know, understand, appreciate and accept that it is one of the very special things about freemasonry.

I'm naturally skeptical, but I also think I am a good judge of character.
The folks tonight really seemed to genuinely care and seemed extremely eager to help and assist in many, many ways.

      It's different....but very nice.

I agree. There are few other organisations where "fellowship" is as sincere and inclusive.

        Have fun !

    Welcome Welcome and thrice Welcome!

    "Enlightening"? LOL!

Hmm? another difference from jurisdistion to jurisdiction. We can do the first two degrees inclusive up to 5 candidates/brothers at a time.

Don't forget to study your "work" now.

I know my lodge has done more in the first two degrees at the same time, but I am not sure how many. They do, however, make certain that certain portions are personal and individual while lessons and study are able to be done by multiple folks at once.

I liked this when it was described to me and feel it was better after having participated.

Now I just need to do my homework.

One thing that helps me is that my wife used to be a Job's Daughter and is interested in Eastern Star. So she understands when I have to say, "sorry....can't go into it further." It is different for our relationship to keep secrets. But she understands because she's been there...and that should she join Eastern Star that she'll also have things that she need keep to herself.

It will be difficult as we've always been open and honest with each other, but I think it will help if we understand to follow the "don't ask, don't tell" rule. Know what not to ask about and I won't have to say, "No."

Oh well...off to finding work again.
