My lodge has become stultifying simply because they never actually seem to do anything. Oh there are the occasional pancake breakfasts, and the regular lodge activities, and raising of members, but beyond that: nothing. The reading of the minutes sometimes takes 15 minutes by themselves. Same ol', same ol'. A lot of the new blood has fallen off simply because of the boredom.
What can one do to make things more interesting without losing the dignity which older members crave?

Re: Boredom
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 6:21 AMthe answer for us has been IF you want to see more being done in lodge then organzie it and do it. Of course that also means you need to recruit active members to help you do it and overcome some "We've never done that before" attitudes but it can be done. The trick is picking things that can get all or most or even some of teh members involved in. Selling teh activity to your ldoge first then to you community is the trick. It's a LOT of work too but can be very rewarding too. -

Re: Boredom
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 10:12 AMOh such an excellent question and one which plagues most masons under 50.
I agree with Val on this but I go futher. If you want it done you have to do it. It is that simple. Look around at they guys in lodge you like. What are they interested in? Cigars? have a cigar night at a place or someone's house. Is it sports? Organize a trip to the sports bar. Is it masonic education? Then organize a study group. Pick a topic for the night and discuss. Have people bring any research on the topic they can find. The posibilities are endless. Another great activity which builds bonds is having bretheren work together on a project. Habitat for humanity is always looking for slaves...er... volunteers. You just contact them, pick a date, get a list of guys and go do some work. Men working together forming brotherly ties....hmmm. Seems I have heard of somthing like that before. Not to mention you can register it under you lodge name and get some charitable word of mouth and it costs the lodge and the bretheren $0.00.
Once you find one or two guys who think like you get them to help you. Get a list from the secretary of the lodge members and their birthdays. Then target the younger members especially those guys who joined and never came back. Let them know you care if they are alive or dead and would like to invite them to do something fun.
Even if you have 5 guys over for hotdogs in the back yard it's better than hearing the minutes read. You have to be creative and just not worry about permission or lodge aproval. If you don't use lodge funds you don't need lodge aproval. If a bunch of guys want to go bowling and they are all from the same lodge so what? Don't let anyone tell you you can't.
Let me know how it goes. -

Re: Boredom
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 1:31 AMAhh - I knew Jim would be chiming in on this one because he has faced exactly the same thing. Indeed we all do.
I think one important way to think of your lodge is as a social group of friends. Who would have their friends over to hear you read the minutes of your last meeting. The bane of Lodges. The best and only solution is to print and circulate them with the lodge summons and simply "The minutes of our last regular meeting having been circulate and taken as read , is there any discussion?(wait 2.35 seconds), then I propose we adopt them as a true and accurate record -all thought in favour ? BANG ! Turns 10 minutes of boredom into a 30 second admin item opening space for more interesting stuff. Indeed it makes it better for discussion because people have had time to consider the minutes . We deal with minutes this way at Lodge, one committees and in business. What board meeting would have the last minutes read in toto ? None ! So don't you !
Getting back at the "Lodge as a social group" I think a great way of planning lodge activities is asking what you did with your family and friends which was fun ? We go to the pub, watch movies, go to wineries, play games, EAT and enjoy a glass of wine. Actually I just thought of a good idea we never have done "Show and Tell". Last meeting our WM (retired army officer) spoke about rations (brought a can of spam) and such. He spoke of over proof rum and which we all sampled. I often take stuff into show and next meeting have some great stuff - some early twentieth century Masonic medals - one for Service in WW1 with dates, S&Q. "Show and Tell" might sound a bit primary school - but people would bring some interesting stuff in with some great stories and tell them with passion and confidence - might also be a good way to involve wives and partners.. Mmm I like the idea.. -

Re: Boredom
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:04 PMhahaha I am always ready to chime
We used to send out our minutes in the notice for about year. Then our GM said we couldn't do it anymore. Kinda sucks the life out of a meeting to have to listen to esencially the same thing everytime. Besides if you miss two meetings in a row you missed you will never know what happened at the first meeting yoiu missed becasue you were not at the second to hear the minutes. If you go them in your monthly summons you would not miss a thing.
so I have to ask which way is better? Which is more helpful to members and keeps them more informed and involved? -

Re: Boredom
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 10:00 AMOur secretary prints them out and hands them out before the meeting. Typically the way it plays out is the WM says something to the effect of "has everyone had a chance to look at the minutes?" which is followed by a ten second pause before somebody makes a motion that they be approved. Give it a shot, I doubt the GL will prohibit it. -

Well. What possible reason could there be for that. That is dissapoiting and sounds like the "because we have always done it that way" thinking..
Sorry to hear that Jim.. Sounds like a whole bunch of Lodges should be requesting the GM to reconsider.. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Boredom
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 6:44 AMwell we were the only ones. It's hard to be at the front of the charge carrying the banner and the rest of the troops are yards back. We kind of become a target. -

Re: Boredom
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 11:38 AMBrotherly flame throwers buring us to the ground. I know they don't see it that way. they feel justified. But i has taken toll on the membership and their attitude toward lodge and Freemasonry in general. You can't spit in a brothes eye and not expect him to reconsider what fraternity means. -
